Founded in 1959 by Fred Mikes, a trained aircraft mechanic, the shop moved to its current location at 155 N. Northwest Highway in 1987 under the ownership of Fred's son Wayne. Mikes carries Cannondale, Electra, Giant, Specialized, and Shimano components, with inventory spanning mountain bikes, kids bikes, road bikes, and accessories. The shop offers maintenance and repair services, test rides, and a resource center with suggested routes and maps; Wayne has been active in cycling advocacy, chairing the Palatine Bicycle Task Force to advance bicycle infrastructure.
