About
Founded in 1989 by Chad, Above Category began with a single hand-sketched custom road bike and has remained a solo operation focused on bespoke builds in Sausalito, California. The shop specializes in custom complete builds across road, gravel, and mountain platforms, with documented work on steel frames (Sarto, Pegoretti, Mosaic) and premium components including Tune, Enve, and Rene Herse. Beyond builds, the studio offers personalized bike servicing, considered upgrades, and bike fitting; the shop publishes a journal of build stories, reviews, and cycling culture.
