Question 1

Does Vulture Space offer a do-it-yourself repair option, or only full-service mechanic work?

Accepted Answer

Vulture Space operates as both a hands-on workspace and a full-service shop. Customers can use the public workstations for free to fix or maintain their own bicycles, with trained staff and volunteers available to assist with diagnosis, tools, and instruction. Alternatively, customers can pay staff mechanics to perform repairs without doing the work themselves.

Question 2

What types of bicycles does Vulture Space have available for purchase or rent?

Accepted Answer

The shop sells a wide variety of used bicycles including hybrids, cruisers, road racers, trail riders, kids bikes, and triples, with sizes ranging from balance bikes for toddlers to frames accommodating larger frames. Rentals are available at $30/day or $70/overnight for standard bikes, $50/day or $90/overnight for e-bikes and tandems, with discounted rates for multi-day rentals. Rentals include a lock, lights, helmet, and directions.

Question 3

How does Vulture Space's repair pricing work?

Accepted Answer

Vulture Space uses à la carte pricing for repairs. The shop thoroughly inspects the bicycle and provides an itemized list of recommended adjustments, replacements, or cleaning, and the customer decides which items to have completed. The shop then texts the customer when the bicycle is ready.

Question 4

Is Vulture Space a for-profit bike shop?

Accepted Answer

Vulture Space is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that functions as both a community bicycle workshop and a full-service bike store. All monetary and in-kind donations to the shop are tax deductible.

Question 5

Does Vulture Space accept bicycle donations, and what happens to them?

Accepted Answer

Vulture Space accepts donations of bicycles, parts, and bicycle-related items in any condition. Donated items are inspected, cleaned, sorted, and made available for purchase at affordable prices.

Question 6

Can customers volunteer at Vulture Space, and what is involved?

Accepted Answer

Vulture Space welcomes volunteers to work in a classroom-like setting where they learn to fix and maintain bicycles while helping refurbish donated bikes and assisting other customers. Interested volunteers can fill out a form on the shop's Volunteer page.
