Question 1

How long does a repair typically take at Small Shop Cycles & Service?

Accepted Answer

Simple repairs like flat fixes are often completed same-day during warmer months. Tune-ups and more involved repairs typically take about a week, though seasonal demand and parts availability can extend that timeline. Customers can bring their bike in for a free assessment and quote before scheduling.

Question 2

What does the $99 full maintenance tune-up include?

Accepted Answer

The full tune-up includes light cleaning, brake and gear adjustment, hub adjustment, wheel truing, and replacement of common wear items such as cables, tubes, tires, brake pads, chain, and cogs as necessary. Parts are not included in the base price; the shop assesses the bike and provides a separate quote for parts and labor.

Question 3

Can Small Shop Cycles & Service work on electric bikes?

Accepted Answer

The shop does not service electrical components on e-bikes, but will handle mechanical repairs. There is a $25 service fee for e-bikes to account for extra work and equipment needs.

Question 4

Does Small Shop Cycles & Service have a free air pump available?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the shop has a pump in front of the shop available for community use. The shop can also typically fix a flat within 20 minutes if a customer has a leaking inner tube.

Question 5

What is the background of Small Shop Cycles & Service?

Accepted Answer

Small Shop has operated as a full-service bike shop in Bronzeville on Chicago's South Side since 2016, focused on providing affordable bikes and reliable repairs. The shop's head mechanic, Chris, has been working on bikes professionally since 2006 and previously taught youth mechanics at Blackstone Bicycle Works.

Question 6

Can customers keep using their bike while waiting for a repair?

Accepted Answer

If a bike is still functional, customers can keep using it while waiting for their repair appointment, reducing the time the bike needs to stay at the shop to a day or two rather than weeks. The shop will provide a specific date when the repair work will be completed.
