Question 1

What is the Watch. Help. Learn. service model at Standard Bike Repair?

Accepted Answer

Watch. Help. Learn. is Standard Bike Repair's signature approach where customers can observe their repair in the stand, ask questions as work progresses, and optionally help with simple steps. This service is offered at $90 per hour with a thirty-minute minimum, and there are no separate à la carte prices: the shop handles the repair transparently, rather than presenting an itemized bill.

Question 2

Does Standard Bike Repair offer à la carte repairs, and how do they work?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Standard Bike Repair offers itemized à la carte service for individual repairs, adjustments, installs, and one-off fixes, with parts charged separately unless otherwise noted. Customers can drop off their bike or stay while the work happens; most flat repairs are completed while customers wait.

Question 3

What specialized services beyond standard repairs does Standard Bike Repair offer?

Accepted Answer

Standard Bike Repair offers custom builds from frame to finished ride (approximately $3,000 total with $700 build labor), bikepacking consultation and assembly ($700 flat package), specialty projects including vintage overhauls and customer-provided parts installation ($200+), and hands-on bike repair workshops offered at various times including some Saturdays.

Question 4

What is the history and philosophy behind Standard Bike Repair?

Accepted Answer

Standard Bike Repair was founded in 2010 by Ryan Kelley in a small cottage home in Boulder. Ryan began with minimal repair knowledge but developed expertise in single-speed bikes, then built a shop centered on teaching and transparency rather than keeping customers uninformed during repairs. In April 2025, the shop relocated to Boulder Sports Recycler, a shared space emphasizing reuse, access, and community.

Question 5

Is mechanical knowledge required to use Standard Bike Repair's services?

Accepted Answer

No. The shop's Watch. Help. Learn. philosophy states that customers do not need to be mechanically minded, only curious. Most customers watch the repair process; some participate in simple steps; all learn about their bike's maintenance.
