Wheelbase opened in downtown Frederick in 1985, founded by Tom Peperone and Ken Jacobson; Peperone has worked in bike retail since 1972 and remains sole owner. The shop carries Trek, 45NRTH, Electra, Shimano, SRAM, and Teravail. Staff are all avid riders and trained mechanics; Peperone is certified in Di2 Shimano, Serotta Fit Cycle, Fit Kit, and DT Wheel Building. The shop offers repair and assembly for all bike types, with services including bike fitting and custom wheel building.
