MSU Bikes began in spring 2003 as a volunteer-run project founded by Gus Gosselin and Terry Link, restoring abandoned bicycles painted in MSU colors (called "green bikes"). The Service Center opened officially in fall 2006 under MSU's Department of Transportation and has operated out of Bessey Hall since then, becoming part of MSU Surplus & Recycling in 2012.
