Question 1

What cycling routes and terrain does Vashon Island offer?

Accepted Answer

Vashon Island features road cycling with challenging hills along the main highway and quiet back roads, as well as mountain biking trails ranging from beginner-friendly single tracks in the island's center to more technical terrain on the Dockton trails on nearby Maury Island. The island hosts organized rides including the Seattle International Randonneurs' 32-mile Vashon Island Loop and the annual Passport to Pain cycling challenge with multiple difficulty levels.

Question 2

How do cyclists get to Vashon Island with their bikes?

Accepted Answer

Bicycles can be transported on all three ferry routes serving the island: the Washington State Ferry from Fautleroy in West Seattle (30-minute intervals, 7 days a week), the Kings County passenger ferry from downtown Seattle (foot and bicycle only, limited commuter service), and the Washington State Ferry from Pt. Defiance in Tacoma (limited service). All ferries take approximately 20 minutes, and regional buses 118, 119, 10, and 11 also accommodate bikes via onboard racks.

Question 3

Is Vashon Island a good cycling destination for riders of different skill levels?

Accepted Answer

Yes: the island offers road cycling options from relaxing comfort rides on country back roads to demanding hill climbs for experienced cyclists, and mountain biking trails suited to both beginners and advanced riders seeking technical terrain. Its proximity to Seattle (15 minutes by ferry) makes it accessible for day trips or longer cycling excursions.

Question 4

What is the 'bike in the tree' on Vashon Island?

Accepted Answer

An old children's bicycle embedded 8 feet up in the trunk of a fir tree has become a notable part of Vashon Island history and a popular tourist attraction. According to local lore, the bike was abandoned next to the young tree in the 1950s and was gradually subsumed into the tree's trunk as it grew around and lifted it over the decades.
