Question 1

What makes da Vinci Designs tandems different from standard tandem bicycles?

Accepted Answer

Da Vinci Designs tandems feature a patented Independent Coasting System that allows either rider to stop pedaling at any time without affecting the other rider, making the riding experience more natural and enjoyable. The shop hand-builds frames using custom-designed tubes in carbon fiber, steel, titanium, and aluminum, with geometry and construction methods proven in racing that customers report feel more like single bikes than traditional tandems.

Question 2

What tandem models does da Vinci Designs offer?

Accepted Answer

The shop offers electric-assist models (Tailwind Road/Hybrid with Shimano Steps, and Tailwind II), road tandems (Symphony Road, Joint Venture, Global Venture, In-2-ition, and Grand Junction), hybrid/mountain models, and suspension models including the Symbiosis XC front-suspension and full-suspension options. Each model line offers different component packages to match various budgets and riding styles.

Question 3

Are da Vinci tandems customizable?

Accepted Answer

Yes, da Vinci Designs describes its tandems as endlessly customizable, with hand-selected components chosen for strength, function, and weight. The shop hand-builds each bicycle and allows customers to select from various frame materials, component packages, and drivetrain configurations including the Independent Coasting System or electric-assist options.

Question 4

Does da Vinci Designs build bikes in-house?

Accepted Answer

Yes, da Vinci Designs hand-builds all its tandem bicycles in Denver, Colorado. Every employee is described as a dedicated cyclist and craftsman, and the shop custom-specs all tubes and hand-selects every component for each build.

Question 5

What is the Independent Coasting Drivetrain and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

The Independent Coasting System is a patented da Vinci feature that allows each tandem rider to coast independently without the pedals locking together. This doubles the range of front chainrings available and gives tandem riders a wider gear range, solving the common tandem problem of spinning out high gears on descents while still having low gears for climbs.
