Founded in 1979 by Forrest Ridgway in a Des Moines basement, Bike World has grown to four locations across central Iowa (Urbandale, West Des Moines, Ames, and a fourth acquired location) totaling nearly 50,000 square feet. The shop carries Trek, Cannondale, Giant, Surly, Benno, Gazelle, 45nrth, Electra, Liv, and components from Shimano and SRAM. Bike World hosts an annual ride-support van from April through August, sponsors local bike clubs and trails, has been an official RAGBRAI shop since the program began, and partners with Variety, the Children's Charity of Iowa to assemble bikes for at-risk youth. Many employees have made careers there; the ten longest-tenured staff members bring over 250 combined years of experience.
