Founded in 1979 by Forrest Ridgway in a Des Moines basement, Bike World has grown to three stores (Urbandale, Ames, West Des Moines) totaling nearly 50,000 square feet. It carries Trek, Giant, Liv, Surly, Electra, Gazelle, and component brands including Shimano and SRAM, with rentals available. Beyond retail, Bike World sponsors RAGBRAI as an official shop, runs a ride-support van most weekends April through August, supports local bike clubs and charity rides, and has partnered with Variety, the Children's Charity of Iowa to assemble over 2,000 bikes. Ten employees have each made a career at the shop, accumulating over 250 years of combined experience.
