Back Alley Bikes is a Detroit nonprofit community workshop founded in 2000 by Detroit Summer to provide transportation and cycling education to youth and neighborhood residents. The organization operates two locations: the volunteer-run workshop in the Cass Corridor (where it has been since 2003) and the Hub of Detroit, a full-service retail shop opened in 2008 in the same building, whose proceeds support youth programs including Youth Earn-a-Bike, Mechanic-in-Training apprenticeships, and Holiday Bike Give-a-Way. The shop serves the Cass Corridor neighborhood and broader Detroit community through repair classes, volunteer nights, and DIY open shop hours.
